God's ultimate purpose is the complete restoration of His creation through the establishment of a glorious New Heaven and New Earth, where resurrected believers will dwell forever in the presence of God.
The Bible begins in a perfect garden and ends in a perfected city-garden. God's plan has always been redemption rather than abandonment of His creation.
"Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." 2 Peter 3:13
"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth... Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them." Revelation 21:1-3
"The creation itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God." Romans 8:19-21
Rather than destroying the physical universe, God renews and liberates it from sin's curse. The New Earth becomes the eternal home of redeemed humanity.
The Christian hope is not merely that our souls survive death but that we ourselves will be physically resurrected.
"It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption... It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body." 1 Corinthians 15:42-44
"Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body." Philippians 3:20-21
"Handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have." Luke 24:39
Jesus ate with His disciples, could be recognized, converse, walk, and even prepare breakfast. These accounts suggest continuity between our present identity and our future glorified existence.
Scripture distinguishes between the current dwelling place of believers who die in Christ and the final eternal state.
"To depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better." Philippians 1:23
"To be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." 2 Corinthians 5:8
"The dead in Christ shall rise first." 1 Thessalonians 4:16
The present Heaven is conscious and blessed, yet the final hope is resurrection life on the New Earth.
Work existed before sin entered the world.
"And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it." Genesis 2:15
"Thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things." Matthew 25:21
"Have thou authority over ten cities." Luke 19:17
"They shall reign for ever and ever." Revelation 22:5
These passages suggest administration, responsibility, creativity, and purposeful service in God's eternal kingdom.
The infinite wisdom of God implies an eternity of continual discovery.
"That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace..." Ephesians 2:7
"They shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them." Isaiah 65:21-22
The New Earth may include culture, science, music, architecture, craftsmanship, and endless exploration under God's perfect rule.
Death does not erase personal identity. Moses and Elijah were recognizable at the Transfiguration.
"Many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 8:11
"So shall we ever be with the Lord." 1 Thessalonians 4:17
Relationships are not lost but perfected in Christ, free from jealousy, misunderstanding, sin, and separation.
Jesus repeatedly connected the coming kingdom with feasting.
"That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom." Luke 22:29-30
"I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." Matthew 26:29
The marriage supper of the Lamb is described as a great celebration in Revelation 19:6-9.
The defining characteristic of Heaven is not merely beautiful surroundings but the direct presence of God Himself.
"In thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore." Psalm 16:11
"God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying..." Revelation 21:4
"There shall be no more curse." Revelation 22:3
The greatest blessing of eternity is unhindered fellowship with God.
"They shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads." Revelation 22:4
"Now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face." 1 Corinthians 13:12
The Bible closes not with escape from creation but with God dwelling among His redeemed people in a restored universe.
"And the Spirit and the bride say, Come." Revelation 22:17
The eternal future is not endless boredom or disembodied existence. It is life in resurrected bodies on a renewed Earth, filled with meaningful work, joyful relationships, continual discovery, perfect worship, and unbroken fellowship with Jesus Christ.
